AYANEO 3 Review: What the Modular Windows Handheld Actually Delivers
AYANEO's modular flagship is fast and endlessly configurable. We hold the spec sheet to the numbers: chipset tiers, real battery bands at stated TDP, and where the price stops making sense.

The AYANEO 3 is the most configurable Windows handheld on the market, and in its top trim one of the fastest. Those are both true, and neither one is the same claim as "the handheld you should buy." The gap between them is exactly where AYANEO's pricing lives, so this review is about closing it: what the silicon actually does, what the 49Wh battery actually returns at a stated wattage, and whether the modular gimmick is a feature or a line item.
Priced from $699 for the base configuration, quoted at analysis (August 2026), with maxed-out builds climbing toward $2,099 at full retail. That spread matters, because "AYANEO 3" is not one device.

The spec check
Start with the chipset, because AYANEO sells two very different machines under one name. The headline part is the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370: a 12-core, 24-thread Zen 5 APU with the Radeon 890M (16 RDNA 3.5 compute units up to 2.9GHz), as reported by TechSpot and HotHardware from AYANEO's spec sheet. The cheaper entry point is the Ryzen 7 8840U with the older Radeon 780M. Both are legitimate handheld silicon; only one is a 2026 flagship. If you buy the base model expecting the benchmark numbers the 890M posts, you bought the wrong trim.
Here is the "specs are marketing" trap to watch. On paper the Radeon 890M leads prior handheld iGPUs, including the RDNA 3-class Z1 Extreme that powers the ROG Ally X, and in unconstrained laptop testing it does. But handheld APUs are TDP-bound, not silicon-bound: at the 15-30W envelopes these devices actually run, the practical gap between a 890M and a well-tuned Z1 Extreme narrows sharply, because neither chip is allowed to stretch its legs. The 890M's advantage is real but it is largest exactly where a handheld can least afford the wattage. TDP is the number that turns those chips into playtime. PC Gamer and XDA-Developers both note AYANEO holds roughly 35W of stable performance with its cooling headroom, and the TDP is user-configurable well below that. A big-battery marvel this is not; the 49Wh cell is mid-pack for the class, and the HX 370's ceiling will drain it fast. That is not a defect, it is physics: watts out the front means watts out of the pack. Anyone quoting you "all-day battery" on a flagship x86 handheld is quoting a TDP you would never game at.
The displays are a real high point. AYANEO ships two flagship panels depending on configuration: a 7-inch 120Hz IPS "TrueColor" and a 7-inch 144Hz OLED "VibrantColor," both 1080p per the manufacturer listing. The OLED, paired with the HX 370, is the config the marketing photos are selling. Memory runs 16GB to 64GB of LPDDR5x-7500, with storage from 512GB to 4TB, plus dual USB4, OcuLink for external GPUs, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. The OcuLink port is a genuinely enthusiast touch — dock it to an eGPU and the machine becomes a small desktop — but it is a niche within a niche, and it is not a reason to buy at this price if you will never use it. On paper, nothing here is short-changed.
Emulation ceiling
Emulation is not the reason to buy a $699-and-up Windows handheld, but it is a fair question, and the answer is straightforward: an x86 machine with a Radeon 890M sits well above any Android SoC for this workload. In practice that means full-speed emulation through the PS2, GameCube, and Wii generations is a non-event, sixth-gen and earlier is trivial, and Switch-class and demanding seventh-gen titles are strong — the ceiling is set by emulator maturity and per-title quirks, not by this hardware. More exotic targets like late PS3 and Wii U exist in "playable with tuning" territory rather than "flawless," which is true of every consumer handheld today, flagship or not.
The x86 advantage worth naming is compatibility: desktop emulators are developed on x86 first, so you inherit the most mature builds rather than ARM ports. Consensus across PC Gamer, XDA, and DROIX is that the AYANEO 3 feels premium in hand — CNC-adjacent build, Hall-effect sticks that dodge the drift problem, back paddles, and dual touchpads for desktop and Steam-style control. The signature feature is modularity: magnetic controller modules that swap the stick, D-pad, and button clusters, including six/eight-way D-pad options and a six-button fighting-game module. Reviewers broadly agree the modules are well-executed and genuinely swap in seconds.
The consensus caveat is weight. This is a chunky, dense device — the heft that comes with a 7-inch OLED, a 49Wh pack, and metal construction. Long handheld sessions ask more of your wrists than a Steam Deck-class machine does. The modules are a real differentiator; whether they are a $200-of-your-configuration differentiator is a personal call, and most reviewers land on "clever, but not essential."
Support & firmware
Here is where an honest review earns its keep. AYANEO is a Shenzhen import brand with a crowdfunding-heavy history, and that carries real trade-offs a US buyer should price in before checkout:
- Software cadence. AYANEO's AYASpace control layer has historically shipped rough and improved over time. Budget for firmware and driver housekeeping, especially early in a model's life.
- Warranty and RMA friction. Support and returns route through the importer, not a big-box counter. Cross-border RMA on a $700-$2,000 device is slower and more expensive than a domestic brand's, and reviewers consistently flag this as the tax you pay for buying at the cutting edge.
- Windows tax. Like every Windows handheld, you inherit the full x86 update, driver, and background-process burden. That is not AYANEO-specific, but it is not zero, and it eats into the "just pick up and play" fantasy.
None of this is disqualifying. It is the difference between buying the fastest thing and buying the most supported thing.
The honest cons
- The name hides two machines. Base 8840U and maxed HX 370 are not the same product; buy the trim, not the headline.
- 49Wh feeds a hungry chip. Real high-TDP sessions are short. Plan around a battery pack.
- Import support profile. Warranty and RMA are genuinely more friction than a domestic brand.
- Price ceiling is steep. A maxed build is laptop money, and you are paying for configurability you may never use.
Verdict
The AYANEO 3 delivers exactly what its spec sheet promises: flagship-class x86 performance, the best inputs and configurability in the category, and two excellent screens. The math it does not do for you is the value math.
