Upscaling (FSR and friends)
Upscaling renders a game at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs it toward the screen’s native resolution, buying performance and battery for a modest hit to sharpness. AMD’s FSR is the common handheld example, alongside integer and simpler scalers for emulation. On a power-limited device it is one of the most useful levers there is — a smart upscale often looks far better than the frame rate you would otherwise be stuck with. Quality varies by implementation and by how aggressive the internal resolution drop is.
