The one expectation to set first

Before any cables, internalize the rule that saves the whole experience: a dock adds ports, not frames. Docked, your handheld runs on the same chip and the same power envelope as it does in your hands — it does not gain horsepower from the TV. In fact, asking that same chip to drive a far larger output resolution makes it work harder, not easier. So the goal of a good TV setup is not to chase the TV's native 4K; it is to pick an output resolution the handheld can actually feed at a playable frame rate. The physical chain

The setup is short. You need a handheld whose USB-C port supports video output (DP Alt Mode — every mainstream PC handheld and most capable Android devices have it; the cheapest retro bars often do not), a dock or hub to convert that signal to HDMI and pass power, an HDMI cable to the TV, and a charger feeding the dock's passthrough. Connect the dock to power and the TV first, then dock the handheld — powering the chain before you seat the device avoids some handshake glitches. Configuring output: resolution and refresh

This is the step that separates a good TV session from a bad one. Once the picture appears, set the output deliberately:

  • Target 1080p, or 1440p at most, rather than the TV's 4K. A handheld APU that manages a game at 800p in your hands will struggle badly trying to render the same game at 4K, so outputting 1080p keeps the frame rate where it belongs. The TV upscales 1080p to its panel perfectly well.
  • Match a sensible refresh rate. If your dock and TV support high-refresh 1080p (HDMI 2.1 territory), some lighter games can use it; for demanding titles, a stable 60Hz output is the safer target. Do not force a refresh the game cannot feed.
  • On SteamOS, the output resolution is set in the display settings and the system generally handles the switch to the external screen cleanly. The principle across every platform: let the TV upscale a resolution the handheld can render, rather than making the handheld render the TV's full resolution. That is the whole trick.

Audio over HDMI

HDMI carries sound as well as picture, so in most cases the TV's speakers take over automatically when you dock. Fixing the usual failures

Three problems cover most TV-output trouble:

  • Black screen, no picture. Usually a dock compatibility or handshake issue.   • Wrong resolution or a cut-off image (overscan). Set the output resolution explicitly rather than trusting auto-detect, and check the TV's picture settings for an overscan or "just scan / 1:1 pixel" option that stops it cropping the edges.
  • Stutter on the big screen. Almost always the resolution is set too high — drop the output to 1080p and the frame rate recovers.
