The Handheld microSD Buying Guide: Capacity, Class, and Cost-per-GB
The number on the front of a microSD card is the one you should ignore. Here is the honest buying framework: the class floor, the capacity math, and the cost-per-gigabyte that decides the value.

Specs are marketing, and a microSD card is where the marketing works hardest. The front of the package shows one giant number — "170 MB/s" — and hides the two that actually decide whether you made a good purchase: the random-access class and the cost-per-gigabyte. This is the buying framework, stripped to the decisions you actually make at checkout. The spec floor, in one line
Buy a reputable brand's A2, U3/V30 card in the capacity you need, and stop reading spec sheets. That is the whole floor. A2 is the Application Performance Class mark that guarantees random-read/write IOPS (4,000 read / 2,000 write minimum) — the workload emulation actually runs, because loading a frontend and resuming a save state is thousands of tiny scattered reads, not one long sequential slurp. U3/V30 guarantees a 30 MB/s sustained sequential floor, which is plenty. Everything above that on the label — the peak-read hero number — is the metric your handheld uses least. Match the card to the job and the rest is capacity and price.

Capacity: buy for the library you own, plus headroom
Capacity is a comfort decision, not a performance one — a 256GB and a 512GB card of the same model read at identical speed. So size it to what you will actually store:
- 8/16-bit and handheld-era libraries are tiny; even a legally-dumped collection of hundreds of titles fits in a fraction of 128GB.
- Disc-based systems you legally own — PS1, and especially PS2, GameCube, and Dreamcast — are where space evaporates. A single sixth-generation disc image can run several gigabytes, so a serious PS2 shelf wants 256GB or more.

The honest rule: buy for your current library plus comfortable headroom, not for the biggest number on the shelf. You can always add a second card, and two 256GB cards often cost less than one 512GB — while giving you a spare and a backup target.
Cost-per-gigabyte: the metric that actually ranks cards
The number worth computing is dollars divided by gigabytes. It flattens the marketing and shows you the real value curve, which is not linear — the smallest and largest capacities are both usually poor value, and the middle wins.

The UHS-II trap: do not pay for a bus your handheld does not have
Here is the buying mistake that costs the most for the least return. microSD cards come in two bus types: UHS-I (one row of pins, ~104 MB/s theoretical ceiling on the standard bus) and UHS-II (a second row of pins for roughly triple the bandwidth). A UHS-II card only reaches UHS-II speeds in a UHS-II host — and nearly every handheld microSD slot in this category is UHS-I. Drop a premium UHS-II card into a UHS-I slot and it politely falls back to UHS-I speed, meaning you paid a large premium for pins the device cannot use. Unless your specific handheld's spec sheet explicitly lists a UHS-II slot (a rarity), buy a good UHS-I A2 card and put the savings toward capacity.
The counterfeit hazard, and the ten-minute defense
The real danger in this category is not slow cards; it is fake ones. Counterfeit microSD cards report a false capacity to the operating system — a "512GB" card that is physically 64GB — and then silently discard or overwrite your data once you pass the true limit. You discover it only when a save you needed is gone. The premium for a genuine name-brand card over a suspicious bargain is a few dollars; the cost of the bargain is your entire save history.
Two defenses, both free. First, buy from a seller you trust — the brand's own storefront or a reputable retailer, not the cheapest third-party listing with a too-good price. Second, when any card arrives, run a full write-and-verify pass (write known data across the whole card, then read it back and confirm it matches) using a free capacity-verification utility before you trust it with anything. A genuine card passes; a relabeled fake fails at the exact point its real silicon ran out. Do it once, on arrival, before you have anything to lose.
The brand shortlist
Stick to the storage names with a track record and a real warranty: SanDisk, Samsung, Lexar, Kingston, and PNY all ship A2 UHS-I cards that clear the floor. The differences between their comparable A2 lines are small enough that price and a trusted seller should decide it, not a 20 MB/s spread on a peak-read spec you will not feel. Avoid unbranded cards and unfamiliar names at implausible prices — that is where the counterfeits live.
The verdict
Buying a handheld microSD card is a three-decision problem, and none of the decisions is the big number on the front. Pick the A2, U3/V30 floor so random reads are fast; pick a 256GB or 512GB capacity where cost-per-gigabyte bottoms out; and buy a name brand from a trusted seller, then verify it on arrival. Skip the UHS-II premium your slot cannot use, and treat any single "MB/s" hero figure as decoration.
