Every handheld with a microSD slot poses the same quiet question: does this game go on the internal drive or the card? The instinct is to treat it as internal-good, card-bad, but that is too crude. Internal storage is faster and more reliable; a microSD is cheaper per gigabyte and expandable. The right setup is almost always a split, and where the line falls depends on one thing — whether a given game actually needs storage speed once it is running. This comparison sorts that out, platform by platform.

The legal line applies to the retro half of this, as always on this site: emulation means games you legally own, dumped from your own cartridges and discs, and we never link or name sources for ROMs or BIOS files. With that set, the question is purely technical: where does each kind of game belong?

Speed: a real gap that only sometimes matters

The raw numbers are lopsided. An internal NVMe SSD in a PC handheld reads sequentially at a couple of thousand megabytes per second with very high random-access performance; a UHS-I microSD tops out near 100 MB/s, and its random performance — the part emulation leans on — is set by its A-class rating (buy A2, as our SD card speed classes explained guide argues). That is roughly a twenty-to-one sequential gap. But the gap only matters where a game is storage-bound, and that is the whole subtlety:

  • Modern PC AAA games stream textures and compile shaders as you play, so they genuinely benefit from internal NVMe speed — some titles stutter or load slowly from a microSD.
  • Retro emulation loads a game once and then runs it from RAM; after the load, card speed does not affect the frame rate at all. A good A2 card's only cost is a slightly longer menu or save-state load, not worse gameplay.

Cost and capacity: the card's home turf

This is where microSD wins cleanly. Internal storage is fixed at purchase and expensive to buy up, while a microSD adds capacity for the lowest cost per gigabyte in the category — and you can add a second card whenever you like. For bulk storage of things that do not need speed (a legally-owned retro library, media, less-demanding games), the card is simply the economical place to put them. Reliability: internal is the safer home

Internal SSD storage is generally more robust than a removable card. A microSD is a small, removable part that can wear, fail, or — the real hazard — turn out to be a counterfeit that reports false capacity and silently loses data once it fills. That does not make cards unusable; it makes them the place for things you can re-download or re-dump, and the place you back up regularly. The practical rules: keep anything you cannot easily replace (and especially your saves and save states) backed up off the card, buy name-brand from trusted sellers, and verify a new card's true capacity before trusting it. Treat the card as expandable, cheap, and slightly less permanent than the internal drive.

Not all internal storage is equal

"Internal" is not one thing, and the difference matters most on cheaper devices. PC handhelds use fast NVMe SSDs; budget and mid-range retro handhelds often use eMMC or UFS flash soldered to the board instead. UFS is meaningfully quicker than the older eMMC, and both sit well below NVMe while still clearing a UHS-I card comfortably on random access. The practical consequence is a design one: on a retro handheld the internal storage is usually a modest amount of soldered flash you cannot expand, so the microSD is not a secondary option there — it is where the library lives by intent. Knowing which flash your device uses tells you how hard to lean on the card, and on the cheapest devices the honest answer is almost entirely.

Upgrading the internal drive

Some handhelds let you replace the internal SSD — the Steam Deck uses a user-accessible M.2 2230 NVMe that can be swapped for a larger one, and a few others allow similar upgrades. This is the way to get more fast storage rather than more cheap storage, but it comes with trade-offs: it can carry warranty and risk implications, it requires reimaging the device's operating system, and 2230 is a less common drive size to source. For most people a microSD is the easier expansion; an internal upgrade is for the enthusiast who specifically needs more high-speed space and is comfortable opening the device.

Where each game actually belongs

Put it together and the split is clean, by platform:

  • On a PC handheld: keep the operating system, shader caches, and your most demanding or latest AAA games on the internal NVMe, where their streaming and load speed pays off. Put emulation, media, indie and older games, and anything not speed-sensitive on the microSD. That gives the heavy titles the fast drive and offloads the bulk cheaply.
  • On an Android or Linux retro handheld: the firmware and system live on internal storage, and your legally-owned game libraries live on a good A2 microSD — because retro emulation is not storage-bound once loaded, the card costs you nothing in gameplay and saves you money on capacity.

This is not internal-versus-card; it is both, sorted by whether a game needs speed once it loads. Fast, reliable internal storage for the operating system, shader caches, and demanding PC titles that stream from disk; cheap, expandable microSD for retro libraries you legally own, media, and anything that runs fine at 100 MB/s. Back up your saves off the card, buy the card name-brand and verify it, and consider an internal upgrade only if you genuinely need more high-speed space. Specs are marketing, and the twenty-to-one speed gap on the spec sheet is one of the most over-applied numbers in the hobby; the verdict is that it matters enormously for a AAA game streaming textures and not at all for a retro title already in RAM — so put each game where its actual needs, not the headline number, say it belongs.
